For many, the environment that they are working or learning within can be described as challenging or even toxic and it can be so for many reasons.

Through the Okanagan Charter, universities, colleges, and institutions, are aspiring to create health promoting environments that establishes cultures of compassion, well-being, equity, and social justice for all.

Within the health system we have a unique challenge and opportunity in that our environments support both those working and learning in a simultaneous physical space. It is important to recognize the additional impact that organizational culture can have on the individuals occupying this space, irrespective of role, that is, employee vs. trainee. This impact can be positive and nurturing resulting in creativity, innovation, and joy. Or it can be harmful and damaging leading to apathy, resentment, and burnout.
